Lineage W, developed by South Korea’s NCSoft Corp., has swiftly reclaimed the top spot in the country's mobile gaming market just three days since its Nov. 4 launch. It also set a new record in terms of daily sales on its debut among Korean gaming apps on Google Play Store, the company said on Sunday.

Gameplay is based primarily upon a castle siege system which allows castle owners to set tax rates in neighboring cities and collect taxes on items purchased in stores within those cities. It features classic RPG elements reminiscent of Dungeons & Dragons, such as killing monsters and completing quests for loot and experience points, levels, character attributes (charisma, strength, wisdom, etc.), and alignments (neutral, chaotic or lawful). A character's alignment affects how monsters and town guards react to the player's character, often turning hostile to chaotic players and attacking on sight.

Lineage W is now available for play in 12 countries and regions, including Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. NCSOFT will expand service regions to North America, South America, Europe, and Russia in the near future. Players can download Lineage W on iOS devices, Android devices, and PC (via PURPLE, NCSOFT’s proprietary PC cross-play service).

NCSoft’s Lineage M, a mobile version of the original 1998 MMORPG Lineage, is one of the highest-grossing mobile titles of all time, generating $3.5 billion in its lifetime. The game continues to generate a vast amount of income for the company and was the highest-earning game on Google Play for May 2021.

With the launch of Lineage W, NCSoft has recovered its lead about four months since Odin: Valhalla Rising, distributed by Kakao Games Corp., overtook Lineage M in July as the country's No. 1 game in terms of revenue. Odin, another MMORP, was unveiled last June.
